It’s that time again. Running around trying to get your special snowflake a “one of a kind” mass-produced hunk of expensive plastic that they will break in less time that it took you to hunt it down across the state in five different stores!!! *whew*
Ok, let’s get a hold of ourselves now and settle down over a nice cup of New England coffee. Where? Oh, I’ve got you, fam! Head on over to Donut Crazy!!
I had first heard about Donut Crazy through a Facebook post that my friend shared with me. I love any sort of baked good and so I had to try it. Especially because the pictures looked SO amazing! They have two locations, one in Stratford and one in Shelton. They are in the process of opening ANOTHER shop in Norwalk. Know what I call that? A trifecta. A sweet triangle of doughy goodness that I can travel to at any time. Well, when they are open. 😉
I held out for a while, I wanted to make sure the hype was real. So many times I’ve been told that something donuty was amazing only to be let down. Finally, I couldn’t wait any longer. I called my momma up and invited her for some taste testing and coffee tawk. (Read in your best Mike Myers voice) We traveled to the Shelton location and were greeted by a beautiful storefront decorated festively for the holiday. Kudos to whom-ever drew the artwork on the windows!
Once inside we were awestruck. The beautiful reclaimed wood and metal decor gave a rustic feel. The fog outside lended to this and made it like a secret ski lodge holiday. The only thing missing was a fireplace! The smell of sweet dough and fresh brewed coffee filled the nose and I knew that this would not disappoint.
The selection of donuts is insane. They have two “types” of donut. The daily donuts and the Specials of the month. The specials ARE a bit on the pricey side but trust me when I say that you definitely get what you pay for, they are LOADED with goodies!
The specials are amazing, but the dailies are nothing to scoff at! They have delicious everyday favorites that are glazed, filled or frosted to perfection! They also carry muffins, pastries, cookies, cupcakes, scones, bagels and Udi’s Gluten Free items. They have THE most delicious breakfast sandwiches that wont break the bank. We decided to try those, also. I chose the ham, egg and cheese on a grilled english muffin.
Everything is prepared to order in the cutest little bakery kitchen. The eggs were well done and the cheese was a river of melty goodness. The english muffin was larger than the standard, making me wonder if they also made those in-house. I forgot to ask because then we moved on to this:
OK?!! I mean come on. This is their Mambo Italiano. Yes, please!
This has traditional Cannoli filling with mini chocolate chips and a light dusting of confectioners sugar over the top. It was PACKED. We had to split it because it was so big. Lets just start at the dough. Light, fluffy, a nice chew and not at all oily. It almost felt like it was baked, but it wasn’t. The filling was smooth and made with fresh ricotta. It was not overly sweet so you could taste the cheese and it didn’t outshine that beautiful shell. The chocolate chips came in at the end to give it that sweet/bitter thing that chocolate does. It was like I had just walked into an Italian bakery and had a cannoli. In a donut. This, paired with the fresh brewed New England brand coffee was heaven. They also have a huge machine that presses fresh orange juice if you’re more into that!
FILLING FOR DAYYYYYYS!
So, We ended up taking 6 dailies home for the rest of our families to try. My 6 lasted about 2 days. Not because they went stale, but because we couldn’t stop eating them. I am just going to leave the info at the bottom of the page here. I am also going to leave a list of places that giving the gift of donuts for the holiday is acceptable.
- Postal worker
- Grocery Store Delivery person
- Any delivery person
- Your Neighbors
- Friendly Blogger person that tells you of said donuts
So yeah! You could totally give these as treats! Maybe a gift card?
